Simikot to Kailash Trek starts from Nepal and ends in Tibet. Tibet is the land over 4000m and full of spirits lightning Buddhism, partially surrounded by mountain ranges with the highest Peak of the world.
After centuries of virtual isolation, Tibet is cautiously opening up to the western world. Officially, China has opened the doors for travelers only these past few years. ITINEARY
Day 1: Flight Kathmandu-Nepalgunj.
The first day you have to fly to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is a steaming hot city in South Western Nepal, in the lowlands of Terai, close to the Indian border, which is just 50 minutes away by flight. You pass the hustle and bustle of the bazaar and see horse carts full of colorful people going to or coming from the Indian border.The Bageshowri temple is one of Nepal’s most important Hindu temples and is worth a visit as well.
Day 2:Flight Nepalgunj-Simikot (2950 m) trek to Dharapuri 4 hrs.
It’s a 45 minutes flight to Simikot over steep mountain ridges with beautiful views of snow-capped mountains. Simikot is a small, mostly Hindu village. You see people weaving at small looms at their backyards.It is situated at an altitude of almost 3000 meters. After lunch the trekking starts with a short climb of about an hour to a little pass (approximately 3150m) to Dharapuri. After a long 4 hrs walk you reach to Dharapuri.
Day 4:Dharapuri to Kermi (2670 m) 4 hrs
Today you just need short for about 4 hours to reach Kermi frm Dharapuri. The trail follows the Karnali River, sometimes high on the slope, with the river far below you and sometimes almost level with it. The river finds its way through narrow gorges with impressive high rocky slopes. 45 minutes before Kermi is Dadakermi. There is a small guesthouse here, which can be a nice stop for lunch or a cup of tea as well.
Day 5:Kermi to Yalbang (3020 m) 5 hrs
Today you will be trails move towards Yalbang. You will need to walk for about 5 hours to reach Yalbang.The trail is flat and slightly uphill, passing alongside fields planted with barley and buckwheat. Beautiful lizards are sunning on the rocks. After about 2 hours you cross a small pass, after which it is a short steep descend till a big iron suspension bridge over the Sali River.
Day 6:Yalbang to Muchu (3120 m) 4 hrs or Tumkot (3380 m) 5 hrs
Today you will be leaving Yalbang & the trail goes high above the Karnali River again and passes the little village of Yangar and then to beautiful Muchu valley or Tumkot. For this you will be walking for about 4-5 hours to reach Tumkot. The path is mostly “Nepali Flat”. At some parts the path is spectacularly carved out of the rocks, and you find yourself walking in a kind of three-sided tunnel.
Day 7:Tumkot to Yari (3700 m) 5 hrs
Today your trail climbs slowly but steadily, with a few steep climbs in between. Pretty soon after leaving Tumkot, you can see the landscape changing: it’s getting more and more rocky and desolate. The few trees left are low junipers.You cross the small village Pani Palwang, consisting of a couple of teahouses along the road, which makes a nice place for a cup of tea or a lunch break. It’s another 1 ½ hour to Yari or Thado Dunga, just after Yari.
Day 8:Yari to Hilsa (3720 m), crossing the Nara La (4620 m) 6 hrs & drive to Puramg (5-6 hrs)
Today,a tough day lies ahead of you, as today you cross the Nara La pass at 4620 meter. It’s a long and tiring climb, but the views are your reward. As the trail climbs, the landscape gets more desolate.At about half an hour from the pass you cross a few big tents (tent hotels, serving foods and drinks). Finally after crossing the pass you will reach Hilsa, close to the border with Tibet.
Day 08:Drive to (Thugu/chu) Manasarover. On Camp
This drive will take us about 3 hours. We will pass many villages and water springs while driving.After 2 hrs you will reach Gurla pass, from where we will have first view of Holy Mt. Kailash. You will also get view of the blue waters of Lake Rakshesh and Manasarowar. Today you will camp in Lake Manasarowar (4600m) at the south side of the lake Near by Thullgo Gompa).
Day 10:Drive to Darchen (1 hour Driving) On Guest House
We will rest half day in Lake manasarovara. Then Drive to Darchen overnight stay in very basic dormitory style Guest House. Arrange the yak for our Parikarma.
Day 11:Trek to Dera phuk.(4-5 hours) On Camp
Parikarama starts. Trek to Diraphuk Gompa.Evening camp there. We will enjoy the very close view of Kailash
Day 12: Trek to over Dolma La pass (5630m.) to Topchen valley 0r (Zudul phuk). On Camp
Trek to Zuthulphuk (cross 5600m Dolma pass). This will be the hardest day of our trek and will take about 8 hours. We will have an early breakfast and begin our trek towards Dolma la. On the way we will meet many pilgrims.The difficulty of the day's walk will seem worth it as we peer up at glorious Mt. Kailash.We will camp near medicine Buddha Mountain in Zuthulphuk valley.
Day 13:Trek to Darchen and drive to Purang. On Guest House
Trek to back to Darchen (Kora ends). After breakfast, we will walk for about 4 hours. We will visit Melarepa cave on the way and continue driving to Thirthapuri one of the other holy place where all pilgrims feel worth full to visit after Kailash Kora.
Day 14:Drive to sher and trek to Manipeme. (3 hour) On Camp
Today,after you cross the Lamka la pass, it’s a pretty easy walk which is mostly going little up to Manipeme (more or less 2hrs).The village of Manipeme is a beautiful authentic Tibetan village, as are all villages in the Limi Valley. Today you will be walking for about 3 hours to reach Manipame.
Day 15:Trek to Till Chu. ( 5-6hours). On Camp
Day 16:Trek to Tashi Thang hot spring. (6 hours) On Camp
Day 17:Trek to Talung (Tak Karbu) (6 hours) On Camp
Day 18:Trek to over Nyalu Pass (4915m.) to Tsongsa. On Camp
Day 19:Trek to Kermi. (2670m) 6 hours. On Camp
Today you will be trekking for about 6 hours to reach Kermi from Nyalu pass.The trail meets the Karnali river again and turns east towards Kermi village. In Kermi you can relax your tired muscles in the hot springs, a great reward for your efforts of the last days!
Day 20:Kermi to Simikot (2950 m) 6 hrs
The first part up till Darapuri (2300 m) and Majgaon (2290 m) is pleasant walking. The trail is Nepali Flat, going up and down. From Majgaon it’s a long climb of about 2 hours from the Karnali River up till a pass just over 3000 meter. But after the pass it’s just 30 more minutes back to Simikot and a well-deserved cold drink and hot shower!
Day 21: Fly from Simikot to Nepalgunj & to Kathmandu.
